I have always liked the idea of kings and queens, ballroom dance, the lavish gowns, the subtle eye exchange between the supposed protagonists where one comes from extreme wealth, class and status but the other not so much and the union between them will of course, be looked down upon.
I blame Jane Austen for my stereotypes!!
Here are my favorite TV Period dramas for those who loves all those emotions I mentioned above:
Downton Abbey
Downton Abbey is your quintessential drama between the owner and the servants of the household. Set in the early 20th century, this British drama is hugely popular and rightly so, because it has everything from love, fight, jealousy, class divide, etc. For me, the highlight of the show has to be Maggi Smith’s character. The series is available on Netflix to stream.

Outlander
Outlander is a time travel romance show based on Diana Gabaldon Outlander book series. It starts when nurse Claire Randall time travels to 1743 Scotland from her 1945 timeline. There she meets Jamie Fraser who later on becomes the love of her life and together they navigate the big moments happened in history while trying to survive. This is the epic TV series which everyone should watch. Originally a Starz series, Outlander is also available on Netflix to stream.

Harlots
Harlots, as the name suggests is a story about Margaret wells who runs a brothel in 18th century London with her daughters. The series shows the struggle they face in their profession, how they are trying to survive, the politics between other brothel owners. This is one eye-opening TV series which will keep you glued to your screens. Harlots is available on Hulu to stream.

Sanditon
Sanditon is special because it has been developed from an unfinished manuscript by Jane Austen. Therefore, when you watch it, you ask whether it’s doing justice to the writing of Jane Austen and I must say, it actually is. The romance shown in the series is so accurate to the era it is set in. I was very disappointed when ITV cancelled the series after season 1 but now the series is renewed not only for season 2 but season 3 as well. Sanditon is available on ITV.

Bridgerton
If you are a fan of period romance, then you must have heard about the popularity of Bridgerton and might have already binge-watched both the seasons available and looking forward to more seasons to come. Based on the book series by Julia Quinn, this is a love story of 8 siblings of Bridgerton family. Each season covers the love story of one sibling, at least this has been the pattern of past 2 seasons, can’t confirm about the upcoming ones. This is a very light-hearted show with amazing music and costumes which can be finished in one sitting. Bridgerton is also available on Netflix to stream.
